Akin to Bozo the Clown
Last week, a caricaturist set up a stand on the Hoval and began selling portraits for 41 cents a piece. Students were thrilled to finally see an event on the Hoval besides wood-fired pizza, poster fairs, firepits, food trucks, alumni stuff, and those other times when a bunch of empty tents and chairs cover the lawn.
For those unaccustomed to the art of caricature, the subject’s features are drawn distorted and completely out of proportion to capture the person’s inner personality and essence rather than create a true physical likeness. For many students, these portraits felt like a key to Pandora’s box, revealing their peers’ true colors. A handful of students, however, didn’t appreciate the blatant transparency of the portraits.
Members of the hockey team raised a stink about the precariously thin hairlines and bulging eyes. Whiny blubbers came from the SGA members, who didn’t think their noses should be pointed so high up in the air. A few English Majors also took part in the fun, but were left in tears after three students had mouths that were akin to Bozo the Clown. A recurrence of lingering baby fat and gobs of drool dribbled down the chins of the freshman students, and seniors were bent out of shape at the hanging jowls, deep-set wrinkles, and the occasional missing tooth that seemed to be integral to every one of their portraits.
Overall, the stand was a success, and the caricaturist, whose name was Gustav, will be returning this Monday with the dazzling price of 39 cents a piece! Holy mackerel!
