Peep My Crib: Brooks

Brooks: The biggest dorm building at Holy Cross. With 400+ students living in just one building, finding individuality, and developing a sense of identity can be a daunting task.

That is the reason that I decided to make my dorm room a complete reflection of myself. I wanted to have the opportunity to share fun and interesting things about myself with the people I am living with, while also providing myself with reminders of who I am, but also who I want to become.

I truly wanted my dorm, especially my dorm wall as pictured, to essentially be a deep dive into the inner workings of my brain. I am an avid movie watcher, so it was definitely very difficult to limit myself to only a few movie posters. I decided to go with some of my all-time favorites, including “Pitch Perfect”, “Mamma Mia”, and “When Harry Met Sally”.  I try to use these movie posters, alongside my absolute favorite TV Show, “Gilmore Girls”, as conversation starters, as they can help me build connections and find similarities with the people that come into my, and my roommates’, space. In addition to the movie and TV posters, I also decided to include a few inspirational quotes and sayings as visual reminders. Sometimes, it can be very easy to go through life with an “Out of sight, Out of mind” mentality. With these posters, I am reminded of important pieces of advice and affirmations that help me to set my days on the right track.

One specific detail from my desk that I felt is another reflection of me and who I am would have to be the Shopkins on my desk. While it might seem silly for a college student to still have toys displayed in their room, these Shopkins are a direct representation of my childhood. Transitioning to college is such a life-changing experience, and having little reminders of the kid that I once was, and the relationships that I have built, is incredibly comforting. Every time I look at the Shopkins above my desk, I remember the games that I used to play with my cousins, and the excitement of going shopping with my mom and finding a new Shopkin to add to the collection.

In general, I think that a dorm room is the one place where students have complete freedom to decorate and fill the space with things that they connect to. College is the place where so many people find themselves, and discover who they want to be, and that all starts with the first piece of room decor that is added to the Amazon-list.
