Survivor Season 49 Winner
“From the very first season, SURVIVOR has been evolving. Now, for our 50th season, it’s time for the next evolution,” said executive producer and host Jeff Probst. With this statement made in February, it was announced that the location of this season will be Holy Cross’s very own Kimball Dish Room.
The decision came from an alliance formed by CBS and Holy Cross. This season, survivors will be tasked with the same goals of outwitting, outplaying, and outlasting—yet instead of getting a killer tan out of this journey and a million dollars, survivors will be awarded a donut and about…uh…less than a million dollars.
In challenges, survivors must either “break, pitch, catch, or put-away.” Breaking consists of taking dirty dishes and scraping off the excess food that students leave on their plates, sorting the dishes, and trying not to get a glass of chocolate milk spilled down your shirt. The breaker then places the dish on the conveyor belt, which sends the dish to the pitcher, who places the dish in the dishwasher. The survivors must navigate what to do if the dishwasher breaks—which will happen—and work as a team to complete their assigned tasks. The catcher catches (for lack of a better term) the clean plates from the washing machine and places them on a cart, which the put-away-er then (do you see where this is going?) puts away (again, for lack of a better term.)
Other challenges consist within these four tasks, such as the number of plates one can stack before they have to put them on the cart, trying not to drop the stack of 10 bowls as one pushes the cart, and having to awkwardly say “excuse me” to everyone as one puts the plates away during dinner.
Remember when I said prepare for the dishwasher breaking? This is what will happen: survivors will be challenged to pile up plates, bowls, cups, mugs, silverware, and other kitchenware, take an elevator down a floor, travel to another, smaller dishwasher in a room that is 40 degrees hotter than whatever it is upstairs (which is also hot.) This room (that is from the Upside Down from Stranger Things) will test survivors’ patience. This dishwasher is much slower and will sporadically spray water at them. This is similar to the “Exile Island” and “Redemption Island” concepts from previous seasons.
Survivors must form alliances. Before the start of each challenge, survivors must discuss “what they did over break.” Other topics include music taste, what animal they think they could beat in a fight, and what they did over the weekend. Failure to form alliances results in being voted out. Success will allow survivors to control the music, but stay wary. Blasting rap music will either send one out immediately or form a stronger alliance with Boy-who-always-has-one-Airpod-in.
It was also announced that Probst will be hosting the show “from a distance” because the steam from the dishwasher will “melt his botox.”
