Ft. Delilah’s As Backup Singers
This past Sunday evening, viewers waited in bated breath for one of the most anticipated performances of the year. Safe to say, Patrick Mahomes’ helium tank delivered. However, viewers were also looking forward to Kendrick Lamar’s epic halftime show. With fire lyrics built into his DNA, Lamar’s performance was going to be Euphoria and nothing short of Poetic Justice. Unfortunately, this was not to be. Kendrick, after having one too many crispy buffalo chicken sandwiches from Croads and catching perhaps the nastiest case of stomach bug known to man, was forced to back out of the performance. He told one of our reporters, “I just don’t want a real life Pitch Perfect moment.”
“I can’t lie, there was a moment of panic,” says the NFL (Neckless, Frolicking, Lady-dudes). “But not to fret. I had a musically gifted buddy who owed me a favor.” Thus it came to be, the man, the myth, the legend, Vincent Rougeau stepped up to the role of halftime performer at Super Bowl 59.
Thankfully, The Eggplant was able to snag an exclusive interview with Vinny. Here’s what he had to say:
Q: What does your pre-performance routine look like?
A: Well, after filming my GRWM, I warmed up my muscles with a light 5k (the walk from Kimball to Hogan), then I warmed up my vocal cords by raising my ya ya ya, and I was ready to go!
Q: That’s awesome! What went into the song choices?
A: Well, I began with a cult classic: my rendition of “Joy to the World.” The crowd went crazy. Then, I just decided to sing a medley of my Spotify wrapped top five songs:
- Man! I Feel Like a Woman!- Shania Twain
- It’s All Coming Back to Me Now- Céline Dion
- Big Girls Don’t Cry- Fergie
- If I Were a Boy- Beyoncé (thank you)
- Baby Got Back- Sir Mix-A-Lot
Finally, to top it all off, I sang “Not Like Us” in honor of our fallen hero Kendrick.
Q: Well, That all sounds great! Thank you so much!
A: Of course! And Go Cross!
All in all, the performance shaped up to be one of the best in Super Bowl history. It even had special guests like Jojo Siwa, Barron Trump, Natasha Bedingfield, and Drake. We here at the Eggplant simply cannot wait for Sir Vinny to break out ‘dem vocal cords again–maybe at the spring concert?!
