Over the past year, I have committed myself to embracing a “say yes” mindset, embracing new experiences and opportunities. Recognizing the value of time, particularly during my time on campus, I have been trying to make a conscious effort to engage in a wider range of activities and events while on campus, understanding the need to create lasting memories and make the most out of this invaluable period of my life while at Holy Cross.

Lately, I’ve been reconnecting with the world of art. Art has always been a significant part of my life, especially through my family. My father’s side of the family holds a rich artistic lineage: my grandparents ran and operated an art supply store, my grandfather participates in a wide range of artistic activities like boat building and painting, my uncle pursued art school and became a designer, and most notably, my father is a graphic designer whose creativity served as my inspiration as a child. Growing up, I was surrounded by art with my eccentric father drafting small and goofy sketches all over the place, creating silly sculptures out of clay, and even recently he has been crafting whimsical crocheted stuffed animals. I’ve been fortunate to witness his smaller creations, but also the remarkable pieces showcased in his portfolio and those he has completed professionally. My family’s passion for art has always had an influence on me. However, as I matured, I found myself drifting from this connection as I began to interact with the outside world, and art was relegated to a less prominent role within my life.

In recent weeks, I’ve been fortunate to immerse myself in various artistic expressions. From attending a captivating play in Providence, to witnessing a magnificent performance of the HC Dance Ensemble, from delving into the analysis of religious art for class, to sharing my drawing skills with students at my SPUD site, each encounter, although small, has served as a reminder of the significance of art in our lives. Art serves as a universal language of creativity and commentary, capable of connecting various cultures and demographics. It enriches our lives by bridging the gap between shared experiences and personal growth. Through art, emotions and attitudes can find expression in ways that words alone cannot, offering insight into our values and feelings, both individually and collectively. These artistic commentaries are integral to our culture, shaping identities and feelings, and ultimately, our shared humanity.

Encouraging the arts is essential in fostering creativity and promoting introspective growth, thus enhancing our well being and contributing to the betterment of society. For us, as students of Holy Cross, the significance of art transcends simply just appreciation; it is crucial to our liberal arts education. By integrating into the interdisciplinary fabric of our courses, art bridges gaps in nuanced ways, enhancing our understanding of diverse subjects and topics. Art also serves as a reflection of social dynamics, serving as a platform for voices to resonate beyond conventional norms, allowing our spectrum of experiences to be wider.
