SGA recently made tickets available for the Senior Ball, calling this year’s theme the most “nostalgic” in recent memory. The theme, voted on unanimously by the Senate, is, “Freshman Dorm.” “Forget the tux and gown” says the advertisement, and “embrace the sweatpants and smell of common area bathrooms.” The senior class reacted with mixed reviews upon hearing the new theme for this year.
Senior political science majors Ashely Ashlenson and Joshua Johnson expressed disappointment in the theme selection, “We were the covid year, we spent more time in our dorms than anyone else. Heck, I know the corners of Brooks better than I do in my childhood bedroom, but I don’t want to spend any more time there.” The link to purchase tickets, released last Wednesday, highlighted some of the core features of the event: “the DCU center will be decorated with cheap LEDs that will probably only last half the ball! Even more exciting, the smell of your Freshman year roommates unwashed laundry will permeate the entire hall!”
Still, some seniors expressed cautious optimism about the event, referencing their fondness for their freshman year. History major Evan Young waxed longingly about his freshman days in Hanselman, “I never even had to put on pants because all my classes were on zoom. It would be awesome if the same was true for this ball. Or, if it’s recorded, that would be great too.”
SGA Communications Rep. Emma McDonald put out a statement in response to the troubled reception. In it, she notes the, “disappointment of a vocal minority of their classmates in this years theme,” but assured the Seniors that, “Every minute detail has excruciatingly worked out, so that you feel the immensity of these 4 years and the enormity of your future all at once.” I caught up with Ashely and Josh to ask them about their response to this announcement. They exclaimed, “I can’t wait to be reminded of the lost year so of college experiences covid caused! To be honest, we’re happy with anything, we don’t even deserve a senior ball because we’ve only been here three years!” Clearly, messaging around the ball is proving convincing to seniors.
When asked about his opinions on the senior class, Sophomore Kelsey Krypton said, “who? Oh, I think I have one of those in my class. I didn’t know there’s more like them. I’m glad they have an event to celebrate their old age.” Have fun seniors, and try not to think about the past too much.
