Staff of the Week: Tom Campbell

By John Kim

  1. Hometown: Springfield, MA
  2. Current position on campus: Admissions Counselor
  3. What is it about your profession that you enjoy it so greatly?: I really love meeting with prospective students and families and sharing my passion for Holy Cross with them. I never feel like I’m giving a “sales pitch.”
  4. Role Model: Laura Boyle (I suggest her for next week’s Staff of the Week!)
  5. Education: Bachelor of Arts in architectural studies and history, College of the Holy Cross, Class of 2014 (that feels overly formal).
  6. Hobbies: Combing my mane, drinking kombucha, hiking, biking, singing in the shower, my car, and any place you could possibly sing, traveling (particularly backpacking).
  7. Favorite Subject: History
  8. Least Favorite Subject: Math
  9. Favorite Animal: Platypus
  10. Favorite Book: “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls
  11. Favorite Color: Blue (kind of like a more slate-blue, not baby blue. I like it. #muted)
  12. Favorite Movie: “The Shawshank Redemption.” You absolutely must see this movie before your time on Earth comes to an end.
  13. Favorite Song: “Fire and Rain” by James Taylor or anything off Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours,” sans “Oh Daddy”
  14. Favorite Sports Teams: The Holy Cross Crusaders. How dare you even SUGGEST an alternative.
  15. Favorite TV Shows: “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Seinfeld,” “Parks & Recreation,” “The O.C.,” “Alias”
  16. Favorite On-Campus Meal: “The College Hill” sandwich from The Pub, which originally used to be called the Salad Chop back in my day.
  17. Favorite Off-Campus Meal: The chili-tots from Flying Rhino #nom
  18. Favorite Aspect of Occupation: Being able to open doors and increase access to a great education for students who historically have not been able to attend a four-year private school.
  19. One Thing in Your Bucket List: To see Victoria Falls in Zambia/Zimbabwe. Google it (or Bing it if you’re a true radical).  It’s breathtaking.
  20. Unique Talent: I can “walk” using my knees while my legs are crossed. It’s hard to describe in words, so next time you see me on campus, just ask me to demonstrate. If only The Crusader could embed .gifs…
  21. Proudest Moment at Holy Cross: Over the summer, I saw on the Class of 2020 Accepted Student Facebook Page that one of the incoming students wrote how he was excited to come to Holy Cross because he was openly gay and was excited to go to a school as welcoming and open as Holy Cross. That made me really proud to be a Crusader.
  22. Something Your Students Do that Frustrate You: I honestly can’t think of anything. I love my student volunteers!
  23. Advice to Your Students: Stop doing so much for our office without getting paid!
  24. Your Mantra: Always remember that your glass is half-full.
  25. If you can change one thing about Holy Cross, what would it be? I wouldn’t mind if we were more liberal with our snow days…
  26. What do you admire most about Holy Cross? Our community’s commitment to social justice.
  27. Funny Holy Cross Story: I was asked to be “The Crusader” by the Marketing and Communications office for a profile of Best New England Colleges on Fox 25 News in Boston my senior year. I went into the studio in the Crusader suit and, thinking that I was the full-time mascot, the news anchors asked me to “demonstrate how I get the crowd fired up at games.” Seeing as I was not the actual game-day Crusader, I wasn’t quite sure what to do, so I naturally proceeded to crump on live television. If you were wondering who that anonymous Crusader was that fateful day, THE SECRET’S OUT.
  28. Any other comments: I’m incredibly flattered to be chosen as Staff of the Week. Thank you!
