On Sunday, Oct. 25th, Holy Cross Campus Recreation hosted its 4th Annual Halloween Charity 5 K Run and 1 Mile Walk on Sunday. The race was open to all Holy Cross students, staff, and families to partake in, and each participant paid to enter the race through a sliding-scale donation; over 130 people registered to attend, with all proceeds going to Team IMPACT and Working for Worcester.
Prior to the race, attendees enjoyed snacks as well as a pre-race costume contest, and then took their places at the starting line on the Moran Patio outside of the Jo at 10:30 a.m. As participants ran along the course, they could spot inflatable Halloween decorations and build community with the other runners. Upon finishing the race, participants could partake in post-race activities that included games, a mac and cheese bar, and a photo booth. Not only was the Halloween run perfect for getting Holy Cross into the Halloween spirit, but the donations to Team IMPACT and Working for Worcester positively impacted the Worcester community.
The money donated to Team IMPACT will help support the organization’s goal of connecting college athletic teams with children facing serious health challenges by inviting them onto the teams, which in turn helps them become part of the athletic community, allowing them to create memories and meaningful relationships. IMPACT helps young children and their families have experiences outside of hospitals and boosts morale during trying times.
The second organization Holy Cross donated to was Working for Worcester, a group that gives back to the community by building playgrounds, courts, and spaces at the request of the Worcester schools and nonprofits. This organization has been serving the Worcester community for 15 years, and in that time, they have invested $2.4 million in the Worcester community and impacted the lives of over 45,000 local children.
Following the race, the Office of Campus Recreation announced, “We raised $1,630 for Working for Worcester and Team IMPACT.” They shared that “your support helps us make a positive difference in the Worcester and Holy Cross communities.”
Overall, the Halloween Charity 5K Run/1 Mile Walk was a success for both the participants and the broader community of both Holy Cross and Worcester, with those who partook enjoying the Halloween festivities while raising money for charitable organizations that benefit children.
