And here we are, once again. The infamous “cold” season, where viruses are running rampant around campus. Already, people are experiencing sickness, and the school year has just begun. It is inevitable that sickness will spread at a rapid pace as the days get colder. Well, almost inevitable.

Holy Cross will be offering a vaccine clinic on October 22nd for those who would like to be vaccinated against these viruses. This is a wonderful opportunity, as being vaccinated provides a way to lessen the spread of viruses as well as reduce the severity of symptoms. Being on a college campus, we are constantly surrounded by people in a high-density environment; this makes it an ideal breeding ground for the spread of infection. Vaccines serve as a way to break that link in the chain of infection and lessen the chance of needing to miss class, sports practice, or club meetings. After all, it doesn’t take much to fall behind during this busy time of the year.

The vaccine clinic will be held on the fourth floor of the Hogan Campus Center. Sign-ups are available online, where individuals can choose a time between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm to receive their vaccine. These sign-ups can be found on Ignite as well as through a link sent to your Holy Cross email. Walk-ins are also welcome. There are a variety of vaccines being offered, including Flu, COVID-19, Hepatitis B, Meningococcal, MMR, Pneumococcal, Shingles, Tetanus, and Varicella. This is an excellent opportunity for first-years who have not yet completed their immunization compliance forms to obtain the necessary vaccines. The vaccines will be provided through Shaw’s Pharmacy, and individuals are asked to wear a short-sleeve shirt.

If you do find yourself coming down with an illness, there are plenty of ways to alleviate symptoms and get better as quickly as possible. As redundant as it may sound, rest is a wonderful medicine for getting over a virus. Along with this, drinking large amounts of water is crucial for your health. When you are experiencing symptoms, it is best to stay out of class in order to avoid anyone else getting sick. Holy Cross has its own health center next to Loyola Hall, and individuals are highly encouraged to make an appointment there if they are not feeling well.
