In honor of Family Weekend, Holy Cross’s very own comedy club, Entropy, had their first live performance on September 20th. The show had a great turnout and was a huge success in both the humor and the fun! Entropy covers all of the bases of comedy, combining elements of stand-up, improv, and sketch comedy to produce original ideas and memorable shows. A full show is composed of eight segments, often including a monologue, five sketches, a weekend update, and a musical guest. The Family Weekend performance was a little smaller than a typical Entropy show, as it did not include a musical guest, but it was still a strong start to an exciting semester of comedy. The comedy shows usually do not center around a specific theme, but because it was Family Weekend, this performance was specifically tailored for the visiting families in the audience.
The cast began the show with a cold-open soap opera sketch which took a hilarious dig at the campus’s hilly terrain. The monologue came next, and every cast member came on stage to say a small, but cheeky piece about their parents. The next sketch was titled, “Detectives M & M,” and the best way to sum up this one is that “it gets better in a cookie.” The Weekend Update segment followed, which always seems to be a crowd-favorite, and then came another sketch titled, “Phil Nye the Political Science Guy,” which was premised on a science teacher who accidentally books Bill Nye’s political brother to come speak to her class. The last sketch to be performed was a game of jeopardy featuring notable Holy Cross alums. Bob Cousy, Tim Leary, and Dr. Anthony Fauci were all on stage for the game show, and some of the best laughs were rightfully produced by this final sketch.
The show ended with the entire cast on stage. Bows were taken and gratitude was expressed to the parents and family members who came for a good laugh. It was an enjoyable time for cast members and visiting family members alike, and the general atmosphere of the room was definitely a happy one. It is safe to say that the comedy club brought Family Weekend to a light-hearted and laughter-filled close, and the club is excited to continue to share their humor with the Holy Cross community at their upcoming show on October 1st in Seelos Theatre.
