Last Friday, fans flocked to the theater for the premiere of “Michael,”, Lionsgate’s long awaited biopic of the beloved ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson. Starring Michael’s cousin, Jaafar Jackson, the film covers everything from his time with the Jackson 5 to rise as the biggest artist in the world. We got a chance to interview some moviegoers fresh out of the theater, here are their thoughts.
“Like, yeah, I love the songs and everything,” one man with long greasy hair had to say, “but I really came here to see some of that other stuff.” “Yeah,” his equally unkempt friend added, “and I personally don’t even care for the music. That’s all I bought a ticket for.” Unsettled, we stopped another man speedwalking to the exit with his hood up. All he said was, “decent flick. Coulda been better.” When we pressed on how, he replied, “I dunno. More molestation. Like I said, decent flick,” and kept walking.
We asked another gentleman what his thoughts were. “I’ve always been a fan. I mean, one of my earliest memories was my parents taking me to see ‘Captain EO’ in Disney World.” Our hearts were immediately warmed by the sweetness of his answer. He continued, “it’s been my favorite attraction ever since. Still wish he touched those kids instead of just dancing with them though.” That warmth was quickly sucked away.
“Good movie, makes sense they didn’t go show the drama later in his career. I didn’t think they’d go into all of that anyway, not really a surprise.” We breathed a sigh of relief at what finally seemed to be the first normal person we interviewed. “I mean, I looked up ‘Michael Jackson free willy’ and a stupid whale just kept popping up. They really don’t make it easy to find.” Not quite. The FJB hat should’ve tipped us off.
These fans may be in luck, however. Lionsgate has recently announced a sequel titled “Michael 2: I’m Gonna Kill You Macaulay Culkin!” that plans to further tackle the controversial Neverland Ranch years.
