At a time where emergency preparedness is an essential part of both safety on campus and off, learning how to react in the face of danger is critical. Due to the need to train the public in emergency situations, preparation that helps one maximize chances of survival and help others during a mass shooting or life-threatening event is critical. In order to spread more information about what to do, the Department of Public Safety is hosting “Run/Hide/Fight” and “Stop the Bleed.” These trainings will teach students what to do if they ever found themselves in an active shooting event or a high-casualty incident as well as how to render medical aid in case of an emergency.

The information in this class is broken up into two essential sections, the first to help immediately react to the threat of a shooter and the second to prevent deaths and stop injured people from bleeding out. “Run/Hide/Fight” helps one discuss a topic that is difficult to breach and to practice barricading and swarming, which are both techniques that can be utilized if ever faced with an active shooting. At the end of the session, the “Stop the Bleed” program will train everyone in attendance to provide medical assistance through effective and quick techniques.

The helpful tips and instruction learned throughout this course is not only applicable to the College of the Holy Cross, but to life outside of the classroom. The information given through the “Run/Hide/Fight” session implements strategies that help one remember to escape, barricade themselves in a room and as a last resort – fight against the shooter.  Additionally, the “Stop the Bleed” training will educate on bleed control techniques and train people to have rapid responses for emergency situations. If ever faced with a life threatening situation, this session will train its attendees to have lower panic levels, effective responses, first-aid techniques and potentially save lives in the process.
