Breaking news! As of last week the Spire is happy to introduce its newest section, Breaking News. Each week a number of articles will be published detailing the most important and late breaking news of the day. It could be something as simple as information about the economic quarter or something as major as a middle eastern peace deal. The goal of this new section will be to keep up with the fast paced news cycle and bring the most important news to the readers.

According to one of the heads of the Spire Ashwin Prabaharan, “This campus needs a media source it can trust, and the Breaking News section headed by Lizzie Swanson and our two Social Media chiefs Elizabeth Palmieri and Gail Durkin is the panacea for this issue. We’re using news articles and alerts from a variety of news sources to bring important local, state and national news to the attention of Holy Cross students. More importantly, we want students to feel engaged with their administration and the campus writ large, and the new section envisions exactly this. We plan on doing as many as we can but anticipate no more than one per day until we get into a better rhythm and are sure our staff are comfortable with the planning. The section will definitely continue, because it will be an expectation for future Chiefs and something we hope the campus demands of us.”

Clearly this will be a new section that while the articles may not have great length, will have great importance. Will McHale echoed Ashwin’s message when asked about the inspiration and purpose of this new section. He said, “… the inspiration for the new Breaking News section came from our broader mission this year to make the Spire a trustworthy media source for the Holy Cross community across print, our website, and our social media. We looked at other college newspapers along with the main American newspapers of record for inspiration, and this spawned our idea of implementing shorter articles on our social media pages to cover more pressing topics right when they occur.”

Being an unbiased source of information is a critical part of this new section, and is made even more important thanks to the increased bias and polarization of today’s media ecosystem. Lizzie Swanson, head of the News section, noted, “… These shorter articles are a great way for the student body to come together and learn from one another in an unbiased way.”

The heads of the Spire are busy revolutionizing the Spire in ways that will continue to benefit both writers and readers, both present and future. Ashwin, Will, Lizzie, Elizabeth, and Gail are bringing the newspaper into a modern age and seeking to keep up with the increasing speed of modern day news while holding onto the objective nature that the Spire upholds.
