This Spring, Holy Cross students are clearing up their phone storage and deleting Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge in favor of a more romantic and intimate platform—LinkedIn. The average Holy Cross student is way too busy procrastinating in Dinand and people-watching at Kimball to spend time on first dates.
LinkedIn has so many benefits, including its ability to save time. In just one click of a class crush’s profile, you can skip the lame “what do you do for fun on campus?” and “what New England state are you from?” stage and get straight to the important stuff: their major. If your class crush is undecided, it’s most definitely a red flag. It’s pretty safe to say that if they can’t commit to a major, they can’t commit to a relationship. No need to waste any more time. If they have declared a major, you can find out whether they will be unemployed after graduation. In this economy, who seriously gets married for anything other than dual-income and tax benefits? Not only does clicking on your class crush’s profile provide you with key information about their relationship eligibility, but it is also a sure-fire way to communicate that you are single and ready to mingle.
The LinkedIn-to-lovers pipeline is a common trope among the Holy Cross community. In an interview with the couple, Emily Luth and Thomas Brooks, they described their whirlwind of romance over LinkedIn. Luth stated, “After making eye contact with Thomas three times in our Religion 101 class, I could feel a spark between us. One day, I was sitting in Steinbucks, and my phone buzzed. A LinkedIn notification. Thomas had commented on my Washington DC internship announcement, “What an achievement, Emily!” What was so romantic about his comment was that the automated comment only has a period. He purposely changed the comment to be an exclamation point. That exclamation point swept me off my feet. From there, it was history.”
For the couple, LinkedIn was the catalyst for romance, and it is safe to say this story is not the only LinkedIn love connection happening on campus. In a recent survey, a jaw-dropping 75% of Holy Cross LinkedIn users confessed to viewing their class crush’s profile at least three times so far over the Spring 2025 semester. 25% of these students admitted to playing hard-to-get by never clicking request, in hopes their crush makes the first move.
Many students have purchased the LinkedIn Premium membership. The Premium membership provides a tremendous leg up in the love department because it allows users to access a list of everyone who has ever viewed their profile. No price is too much for love–not even a $479.88 yearly membership fee! If you don’t buy a premium membership, you probably will miss the notification that your class crush viewed your profile and end up single and alone. In the case of LinkedIn, money can definitely buy you love.
