This past weekend, the College of the Holy Cross’ Athletics demonstrated support for Breast Cancer research with their annual “Pink the Rink” event hosted at the Luth Athletic Center. The Hart Center Arena hosted a hockey doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Upon entry to the Luth Athletic Center, students greeted fans by selling high quality black beanies with the Holy Cross logo stitched in pink thread. The entryway was adorned with pink heart balloons, streamers, and tables covered in pink tablecloths to match the pink theme. The “HC for A Cure” student organization arranged the hat-selling table and raised a significant amount of money with their concessions.

All the proceeds from hat sales went to the Pink Revolution Breast Cancer Alliance of New Hampshire, a nonprofit organization. Since cancer treatment can be a financial burden on many families, this organization helps support cancer patients and provides them with essentials. It was heartwarming to see the large crowds of Holy Cross students and members of the Worcester community gathered in support of Breast Cancer Awareness and the Holy Cross Hockey teams.

Our Women’s and Men’s Hockey teams were both victorious, and both prevailed after fighting through the high-excitement overtime. In the women’s game, Carmen Elliott, a senior defensewoman, skillfully scored the game-winning goal in overtime against the University of Maine. This victory was crucial for the team, and was even more remarkable considering it was senior day. During the men’s game, the crowd erupted as junior forward Matt DeBoer scored the game-winning goal in overtime.

Additionally, the weekend demonstrated the philanthropy of the hockey coaches, who generously pledged to donate $1 to Breast Cancer research for every Holy Cross student who attended the games. The student-athlete participation in the event made it even more meaningful. During the intermission between periods, the screen on the Jumbotron displayed a video of the hockey players holding the name of a personal connection to cancer and who they fight for every day. Most of the crowd wore the special edition Holy Cross pink beanies and a pink ribbon, which they purchased right outside the arena. The large crowds and the sense of community at Pink the Rink was a proud moment for the Crusader community.
