As a survivor of the college application process, I have been rewarded with the ogling stares of high schoolers who got dragged on college tours with their parents. I feel the need to mention two particular high schoolers (on separate tours) who were wearing Boston College merchandise. I wonder if they got off the wrong exit and ended up at Holy Cross by accident.
These prospective students, or future BC rejects, will soon fill the incoming class of Holy Cross. The BC reject is a very particular breed of Holy Cross student. We all know what I’m talking about. That one kid in your Montserrat who needs you to know HC was their ED2 (after they didn’t get in ED1 to BC). Or that one girl who says the “bar scene” is “so much better in Boston” (she’s from Minnesota, how would she know?). Or that guy who says he’s going to major in business (we don’t have that here, Jake). The college admission process is difficult for everyone, but something about those BC rejects screams, “I’m still coping.” You may be wondering how you can spot a BC reject. Don’t worry – they’ll tell you! The fact that they wish they went to BC instead of Holy Cross will be one of the first things they ever say to you. The BC rejects will tell you that Holy Cross is BC’s safety school, or that we’re the less cool version of BC. If that’s true, you’re in the safety net with the rest of us.
In light of these incidents, the office of admissions at Holy Cross has announced that they will be opening a support group for BC rejects. All are welcome, but mostly if your grandparents donated a building and you still couldn’t get in. Meetings will be held in the football stadium to help rejects cope with lack of football culture. Refreshments will be served, including maroon and purple cookies to help integrate rejects into Holy Cross society. There will also be a special event held on the Hoval where you can throw your rejection letter into the fire pits. This opportunity is open to any and all BC rejects. Help is available.
