The biannual HerCampus Thrift Store was a success!

This Monday, October 28, 2024, HerCampus and Eco-Action collaborated and hosted a Thrift Shop event at Holy Cross in Hogan B/C! Students had the opportunity to participate in donating clothing on October 23 and October 24 from 10am to 2pm in the Hogan lobby, and then, from 5-7pm on October 28, they were able to shop in Hogan B/C for various items!

As a biannual event, the Thrift Shop has served students with an opportunity to acquire not only new clothing, but implement routines that can lead to a less consumer-based lifestyle. Fiona Smith ‘26, Co-Chair of HerCampus at Holy Cross, further explained this, stating that “We do this every semester and we really love an opportunity to promote sustainability and give back to our community in a fun and creative way. People love the thrift store, it’s a way to find something someone doesn’t want that you may! Donate next semester! It’s a celebration of clothes and love!” By presenting an unconventional and creative way of donating clothes, students are able to deepen their connection with the Holy Cross community and the broader world around them.

Fast fashion is a trend that is common in college, where students are drawn to cheaper and less sustainable clothes so that they can fit in with various trends and in various contexts. However, with options like HerCampus’s thrift store, students are able to have different options available to them to support their clothing choices. Emma Weiss ’26, Co-Chair of Eco-Action and a general member of HerCampus, emphasized this, stating that “I’m part of Eco-Action and HerCampus and we wanted to promote the thrift store for sustainability and why it’s better for the environment than buying new clothing. Options like this are better because fewer clothes end up in landfills, there is less resource waste, and there is less chemical pollution, which is better for you as a consumer and better for the environment.” By donating and shopping from thrift stores like the one HerCampus offered, students will have an opportunity to fulfill the Holy Cross mission of living for and with others.

Members of HerCampus truly felt this impact, understanding the importance of how this links their community together through shared interests and needs. Meredith McDonough ’26, a general member, lamented on this, emphasizing how the thrift shop is “A great way to promote such a sustainable activity and to bring people across campus together in a fun way by shopping for clothes that allow students to express themselves. Students can meet new people, connect with friends, and add some additions to their wardrobe!”

If interested, make sure to stay tuned for next semester’s thrift shop so that you can not only donate, but find some new staple outfits!
