Let’s Sing Kumbaya!

Congratulations fellow Crusaders! Our campus was chosen to be the site of Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys’ new virtual portal after a lengthy and rigorous selection process. If you were not already aware, Gylys was the creator behind the (in)famous portal linking New York City and Dublin, Ireland. These portals, which opened in the spring of 2024, provide a 24-hour livestream into the streets of their respective cities, connecting the Irish capital and the American metropolis despite being separated by the Atlantic Ocean. Gylys’ stated intention behind these portals is to show that “we humans have more to share than what separates us”  and that “we are all interconnected on this planet of ours.” This lofty ideal was mostly achieved. Mostly.

While the portal between NYC and Dublin was overwhelmingly filled with positive acknowledgements from people to their fellow man, there were also some questionable incidents that were probably isolated. Indecent exposure. Display of profanity. Dubliners showing pictures from 9/11 on their phones. However, these rare occasions can likely be chalked up to the rugged yet good-spirited relationship between the Irish and American people. Fortunately, Holy Cross students ought to be much more upstanding, especially when it comes to another respectable institution like Boston College.

The portal opened with much fanfare, including a riveting performance from the Goodtime Marching Band and a routine by the Dance Team. The Crusaders’ enthusiasm was reciprocated by the Eagles, who followed with a few numbers by their marching band. Saying “joy was in the air” would be an understatement. Nay, the feeling of camaraderie was so tangible that one could grab it out of the air and playfully wrestle it to the ground. And to think only a short year ago, these same students were hurling insults at each other at a football game- what sheer folly! Truly, the brotherhood between the two schools had never been closer.

Moments after the crowd dispersed, one Boston College undergraduate walked up to the portal and [REDACTED]. Furiously, a few Holy Cross students retorted by [REDACTED] their [REDACTED] all over the [REDACTED]. Despite the portal having no audio, students repeatedly screamed [REDACTED] over and over again at the screen. It sounded something like this: “[REDACTED] [REDACTED] [REDACTED] and your mother!” A rock, thrown by an unknown assailant, was briefly seen soaring above the crowd before shattering the screen into a million pieces. Well, it was nice while it lasted.
