The Delilahs is an all-girls acapella group that has been a very active presence on campus since its founding in 1993. It is now run by Rea Nasif ‘24 and Mia Macdonald ‘24 who are proud of what the group has accomplished thus far in the academic year. Each week they prepare and perform two songs. They rehearse every Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday, and hold performances every Monday at Cool Beans at 10 pm. 

Member Jane Gargano ‘27 shares that the group’s “community is awesome” and that the “girls are all my best friends.” In conjunction with this, Nasif shares, “our club is super productive and creative but also so caring and friendly at the same time. What people don’t see behind the scenes is that we are rehearsing for over 6 hours a week (excluding performances) and making our arrangements from scratch. But even through all this, we manage to form such strong friendships where it feels like a sisterhood. Everyone on the team treats each other like siblings and it’s been a great thing to experience these past 4 years.”

Last week, in anticipation of Valentine’s Day, the group put on impromptu performances at Kimball. Students paid $3 to watch an unsuspecting friend receive a “singing valentine” in real time. The songs available for singing valentines included Brittney Spears’ “Toxic,” Meghan Trainer’s “Dear Future Husband” and Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You.” According to Nasif, “the singing valentines have been a tradition for a while now.” She adds that “seeing people’s reactions is priceless and the excitement everyone has when buying them is amazing.” Her co-chairman, Macdonald, adds that “I would say people were caught off guard at some times but most people are flattered to get one.”

In terms of their roles as leaders, both Nasif and Macdonald are very involved and deeply care for their fellow club members. On the topic of leadership, Nasif states that both she and Macdonald hope “to be the kind of leaders that have a strong relationship with everyone because that’s the way a group is successful. We make sure to be respectful to everyone in the way we seek to get our points across and establish the way we want to be treated.” Macdonald adds to this that, as co-chairmen of the club, they “definitely seek to accomplish providing a space for all of the girls to explore creativity and collaborate in the music arranging process where everyone feels confident when performing.”

If you are interested in joining the Delilahs, keep in mind that they will hold auditions at the beginning of the upcoming Fall semester and that everyone is welcome! In the meantime, make sure to pop by for their performances on Mondays, even if you are just passing by at the lobby shop or studying at Cool Beans. As a Cool Beans frequenter myself, I am always pleasantly surprised when there is a performance while I am studying there. It gives me an opportunity to momentarily forget about my stressors and enjoy the present moment. The Delilahs also plan on organizing more formal performances this Spring.
