With the first month of the remote fall semester behind them, it’s clear that students at the College of the Holy Cross have not only kept busy, but they’ve kept in touch with each other. Our 10/02 issue is rich with in-depth student conversations from all over the community. Read about how Tech Assistants are streamlining the Zoom classroom experience in “An Interview With ‘Unsung Hero’ Najee Quashie ‘21: The Highs and Lows of Virtual Academia,” by Stacey Kaliabakos ‘23, Features Editor. A first-year reflects on his connection to the HC community in “An Interview with Daniel Maddigan ‘24: Experiences of a First-Year Remote Student,” by Bridget Flaherty ‘21, Features Editor. A CNA shares her tips for students interested in medicine in “A Conversation with Grace Hamilton ‘22, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA),” by Nicole Letendre ‘23, Features Editor. A student athlete talks about keeping team spirit high despite being separated for the semester in “Weekly HC Athlete Spotlight – Carrie Malatesta ‘21, Women’s Crew,” by Mike O’Brien ‘23, Chief Sports Editor.

Speaking of students, a very important alumnus will be speaking with the community next week. Dr. Anthony Fauci ‘62 is a trusted leading authority on the COVID-19 response, and despite an incredibly demanding schedule, Dr. Fauci will join Holy Cross students, faculty, and staff in a webinar on October 6, at 2 p.m. EDT. Read more about the planning process of the event and what to expect next Tuesday in “Event Preview: Student Forum with Dr. Anthony Fauci ‘62,” by Hui Li ‘22, Co-Chief Graphic Designer.

The beginning of October also signals a beginning to the Halloween season (or, if your celebrations start early, a milestone). To get into the spirit, learn how a Holy Cross English Professor turned a Zoom session into a recorded script reading of her screenplay about Edgar Allan Poe, which will be streamed at the International Poe Fest on October 3. For more information, read “HC Professor’s Screenplay Presented at Poe Fest in Baltimore,” by Kelly Gallagher ‘22, Editor in Chief.

If that’s not spooky enough for you, how about the fact that students’ first break has already come and gone? It may have been a “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” moment, but don’t worry, the magic has been captured by our dutiful satirical writers. Check out “HC Students Catch a Break,” by Hannah Johnson ‘21, Chief Eggplant Editor.
