Bah Hum Bug, Halloween Costumes

Not to be the Ebenezer Scrooge of All Hallows’ Eve, but I despise Halloween costumes. I find the process to be time-consuming, expensive, and too deliberative for a few hours of trick-or-treating/partying.

When it was my parents’ responsibility for putting together my Halloween costume, I didn’t mind at the very least. Dressing as Cinderella for an evening, wearing an elegant gown and sparkly “glass” slippers, it was every little girl’s dream! Once I hit middle school, however, I didn’t find enjoyment in having to run around searching for the “perfect” character to be for one night. One year, I threw on an orange-pumpkin shirt with black leggings prior to trick-or-treating with friends, deciding that costumes were overrated. My aversion to Halloween costumes was thus born.

Now that I’m in college, I have even less of a desire to scan through Spirit Halloween or endlessly scroll on Amazon for a cute outfit. While I enjoy seeing carefully-coordinated costumes on Instagram, I can’t find the motivation to venture for a costume of my own. As a busy student, I don’t have time to bargain between completing midterm preparation while analyzing the cutest costume trends on TikTok. Now that we’re down to the final days until the spookiest day of the year, I still don’t have an exact vision as to who or what I will be on Halloween. My procrastination peaks around this time of year, as previous years I would’ve been found searching for remnants of a costume in the worn-down sections of Spirit Halloween the day of the holiday.

To clarify, I do love Halloween. While I view Halloween costumes as an annoying feature of this wonderful holiday, I enjoy watching spooky movies, sipping on my pumpkin-spiced beverages, and covering my home (and dorm room!) in Halloween-themed decorations. The entirety of the fall season is magical to me, but All Hallows’ Eve is a key feature of making this time of year special to all.

I find myself resonating closely with The Office’s Jim Halpert, sharing his disdain for Halloween costumes. Seeing as I am currently on a time crunch for costume design, I may just pop out as a Three Hole Punch Jim this Saturday night.
