This past weekend marked yet another successful family weekend! With tailgates, a surplus of lobby shop purchases, and even a pretty close football match against Yale, this year’s family weekend was definitely one for the books. While the highlight for many was roaming around the tailgate and eating hot dogs from someone who may have been a friend of a friend’s great uncle, Holy Cross offered several different exciting tours and events for families to participate in.
Family weekend was kicked off with guided tours of the Cantor Art Gallery exhibit Queens, Gods, and Devotees: Selections of the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art on Friday afternoon. The collection is brand new this year and features over 30 artworks relating to spirituality and divinity specific to the Black American experience. In addition to offering tours of the exhibition, Tom Cadigan, our Director of Alumni Regional and Special Programs, led a “Hidden in Plain Sight” tour, guiding guests through popular spots on campus and offering little-known facts about them. Both the Office of Sustainability and Professor Enrique Quezada-Llanes offered respective informational events regarding campus living and the classroom experience, and the Center for Career Development offered an information session for parents on career development throughout all four years of Holy Cross. The Last Pass, a new play about Holy Cross alum Bob Cousy’s partnership with teammate Bill Russell, had two staged readings at the PAC, and our Men’s Club Rugby team had their senior night in a match against Springfield College that they won 35-5. Friday closed off with a Volleyball match against American University and a Campus Activity Board Casino Night.
Saturday began with an open trail mix bar at Ciampi, and President Rougeau’s address to the community at the PAC. Brooks Music Hall featured an Irish band performance, and a giant carnival was available on the Hoval throughout the day. Of course, families were welcome to tailgate on both Baseball and Freshman fields during football’s 2 p.m. game against Yale. Our volleyball team played against Navy, and a family weekend Mass was offered at St. Joseph’s chapel at 4:30 p.m. BSU had their annual fish fry in Hogan, and fire pits were available to families from 8-10 p.m.
The Jo offered both Pickleball open play and Yoga on Sunday morning, as well as a sound bathing class in Ciampi with Char Willingham. Entropy’s comedy show was at 11 a.m., and families enjoyed escaping the dreary weather to experience the club’s different sketches (some even about club members’ parents)! Laurence Rosania, director of Liturgy and Music at St. Joseph’s Chapel, offered a tour of the sacred space at 12:30. Women’s soccer played Loyola Maryland in the afternoon, and both Women’s and Men’s Club Hockey played in the evening, with Women’s Club Hockey defeating UMass Lowell 8-0.
With all of the exciting events set up for family weekend, I hope this review enlightens the campus about all of the different activities available for families each year. While I had an absolutely spectacular time this weekend with my family, I’m going to love checking out more Holy Cross events with them next year!
