Anna Maria College, a small Catholic liberal arts institution in Paxton, will close permanently at the end of the Spring 2026 semester, marking the end of nearly 80 years of operation.

The college cited long-standing financial challenges as the primary reason for its closure. In a statement shared with the camapus community, the administration described the decision as difficult and unavoidable after “years of financial pressure that we were ultimately unable to overcome.”

Founded in 1946 by the Sisters of Saint Anne, Anna Maria College was established with a mission rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition and a commitment to expanding access to higher education. Originally focused on educating women of modest means, the institution grew into a coeducational college serving a broader student population while maintaining its emphasis on service and community.

In the announcement, the college’s president acknowledged the emotional weight of the decision, writing that it was made with “profound grief” and only after leadership had “examined every option” in search of a sustainable path forward.

The closure will directly impact current students, faculty, and staff. College officials stated that graduating seniors will still be able to complete their degrees and participate in commencement. For underclassmen, the school is working to finalize transfer agreements with other institutions and has pledged individualized support to help students continue their education elsewhere.

Faculty and staff, many of whom have spent years at the institution, were recognized in the statement for their dedication. The administration emphasized its commitment to providing transparency and support during the transition.

Beyond its immediate impact, the closure reflects broader challenges facing small, private colleges across the United States, many of which are struggling with declining enrollment, rising costs, and increased competition. Anna Maria’s situation underscores how even long-standing institutions with strong community ties are not immune to these pressures.

Despite the closure, college leadership emphasized the lasting legacy of the institution. The values established by the Sisters of Saint Anne will continue through its alumni and the communities they serve.
