Concluding their 2025-26 indoor season, the Holy Cross Track and Field squad shipped up to Boston for two final meets: the Patriot League Indoor Championships on the first weekend of Spring Break, Feb. 28th through March 1st, and the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Championships on March 6th and 7th.
While the squad is most certainly keeping their eye upon the upcoming outdoor season ahead, the team achieved some notable successes at both championship meets that need to be recognized.
Held at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center in Roxbury, Mass., the association hosted schools from across the New England area, including the University of Connecticut, the University of Massachusetts– Amherst, Colby College, and Babson College to name just a few, to compete in over 60 events.
Sophomores Josh Gentchos, Lewis O’Connor, Robert Forster, and Jack Larkin alongside first-year Nic Oglesby all finished with meet highlights. Nic Oglesby cleared a 1.96 meter jump to secure seventh overall in the meet, a great prelude to his assured success with his coming career here on the Hill.
Both long distance runners, Robert Foster and Jack Larkin, finished T20 overall in the meet with Foster clocking a 4:20.95 in the mile. Lewis O’Connor finished eighth in the 3k with a time of 8:37.19. Most notably, Josh Gentchos took home some hardware, finishing second in the men’s 200-meter dash. With a time of 22.12 seconds, Gentchos secured the silver.
At the Patriot League Championships on Sunday, March 1st, multiple student-athletes took home medals and many were either close to podium finishes or within the top-10 of their respective event.
Junior Joseph Mahon was the headliner of the meet for Holy Cross, not only securing 18 points as the top point scorer of the meet but also clocking a time of 8:06.74 in the 3k to finish first.
Not to be outdone, senior Liam Lyons secured the silver medal in the mile with a 4:05.96. In the distance medley relay (DMR), which consists of four legs with four different athletes covering a total of 4000 meters in segments of 1200m, 400m, 800m, and 1600m, the Holy Cross squad set a new school record at BU’s Track & Tennis Center.
Lyons, along with fellow senior Jack Noble, junior Thomas Speltz who is a recent transfer from Colby College, and first-year Willem Martino, took home the bronze with a time of 9:51.12.
In the triple jump, sophomore Tireni Asenuga and junior Logan Mott both finished in the top 10 with personal-bests, Mott with a PR of 13.91m and Asenuga with a PR of 14.14m.
Finally, two juniors, Tristan Miller and Michel Mondesir came tantalizingly close to podium finishes in their respective events. Miller set a PR in the 400m of 47.95 seconds to finish fourth, and Mondesir cleared 2.04m in the high jump to close in fourth place as well.
As the snow melts and the weather gradually becomes warmer, the team now looks forward to the outdoor season ahead. They have two weeks to push through tough workouts and prepare for their first outdoor meet. The Holy Cross squad will open the outdoor season at the Black and Gold Invitational meet at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island on Friday, March 27th.
