It is that time of year again when Student Government Association (SGA) elections are in full force. This past week, strong competition was sparked, as the candidates have been knocking on doors or even creating Instagram accounts for their platforms in order to engage with the student body. At Holy Cross, the SGA’s mission statement highlights its dedication to “protecting the interests and voices of the student body,” which is reflected in the candidates’ passion for highlighting issues that they believe warrant change on campus, and makes the election process all the more important.

As the  Class of 2029 recently arrived on campus, there were many available positions for the class to take leadership on campus and work towards creating positive change amongst their peers. Freshman students had the opportunity to run for: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and three positions for Senator. There were also two positions for Senator at Large available for any grade level. For other grade levels, positions were more limited, but members of the Class of 2026 had the opportunity to run for class Secretary, Treasurer, as well as two Senatorial positions, and the Class of 2027 was able to run for all positions.

To run for any SGA position, candidates submitted a “Letter of Intent” which was then distributed for the student body to read, and make an informed decision for their representatives. The letters highlighted their candidacy and goals for the upcoming school year. In these letters, similar issues were emphasized that students hoped to resolve for the betterment of campus life. For the freshman, candidates mentioned goals such as “returning the trash cans to the hallways of the residence buildings,” “creating formal events to connect students of the same grade level,” as well as implementing “any changes the student body wishes to make”. Other candidates highlighted their dedication to working towards creating a united campus community, as well as allowing students to voice their opinions.

Interested students had the opportunity to hear from the candidates during the annual “Meet the Candidates” event on Thursday, Sept. 18th. During the event, candidates were able to offer brief two-minute remarks for their electoral campaign, which is an important step towards becoming a member of the SGA. Additionally, the candidates were permitted to begin campaigning a week before the closure of the voting.

This year, voting began on Monday, Sept. 22nd at noon, and closed on Wednesday, Sept. 24th at noon. Students were able to cast their votes through the form on myHC. It was important for students to participate in voting, as casting a ballot is the best method for students’ voices to be heard, and for the best candidate to be chosen for the positions. All candidates have done an excellent job with their campaign and should be very proud of their efforts.
