Springtime at Holy Cross

It’s the most wonderful time … of the year (on campus). If you were starting to sing that Christmas song by Andy Williams in your head, I wouldn’t blame you. But I will say that when wondering what the most wonderful time of the year is at Holy Cross, the answer has to be the season of spring. There is no better time of the year to be on campus than during this temperate season that began on March 20, 2025. Spring at Holy Cross is different, hear me out on why.

With spring following winter, I’m sure many of you – especially those who come from warmer environments – are joyful to move on from the snowy and cold winters of Worcester and transition to sunnier days ahead (I could attest to that). As beautiful as the campus could look with snow, the spring weather just brings a sense of serenity and love for being outdoors because the temperature is so comfortable that you see tons of people doing a multitude of things outdoors. I mean who doesn’t love being outdoors, walking around in comfortable clothing, and basking in the fresh air and nature of campus? This type of setting allows for so much to happen outside. You know what they say, you look good, you feel good, and if you’re feeling good, attribute that to the lovely spring weather.

Now, what is there to do on campus during spring? Well, first off, as indicated above, get some fresh air. Not only is it healthier for you, but it’s more pleasant to be, let’s say, listening to music, eating lunch, or doing homework/studying at places such as the tables near Dinand Library or anywhere on the Hoval. Even just sitting on the Hoval grass or setting up a hammock to relax nearby is worth it. Speaking of the Hoval, as a central and popular place on campus, so much goes on there during the spring that you don’t want to miss. Starting with Food Truck Fridays at night, that’s usually a hit, giving you an excuse to get some free food outdoors, sit around with friends on a nice evening (occasionally at the fire pits), and most importantly, save up on dining dollars and a Kimball meal swipe (wink wink). During the day though, when the sun is shining bright, and you just want to find a way to be active outdoors, rent some lawn games, such as spikeball, from the Sader Center and play those with others on the Hoval. One of my good friends here, Ned Dailey ’25, greatly summarizes the vibes around the Hoval: “Spikeball at the Hoval is an awesome activity when the weather turns around in the spring. I always look forward to it towards the end of the year.” Because of these enticing scenes, I sometimes walk by the Hoval on purpose just to see what’s going on and how lively the action is.

On the more musical side of things, my personal favorite outdoor events that happen on the Hoval are Mount St. Jams and the Battle of the Bands. I love how not only they are live student-run performances for free outdoors, but also with the ambience of singing along, supporting your friends, and having a good time, it’s hard to leave. But then, what probably is the epitome of spring at Holy Cross is the annual Spring Concert that takes place on Freshman Field the last weekend before classes end, which is one of the Spring Weekend events hosted by the Campus Activities Board (CAB). Here, everyone is so joyful and celebratory of getting through classes for not only the semester but the entire year, and it’s rightly so that students should enjoy a concert that most likely won’t be as accessible and affordable as these unforgettable performances provided on campus.

While these are all things to do at Holy Cross, if you’re feeling desperate to go off campus during the spring, a fan favorite opportunity is going to watch a Worcestor Red Sox game at Polar Park. In case you’re not the biggest baseball fan, or know nothing about sports, these games are something fun to do to clear your mind from being stuck on campus and once again, to appreciate the outdoor weather at a nice ballpark (with a chance to catch ideal sunset views from the outfield lawn area). But as you can tell, there is so much to be happy about in the spring at Holy Cross. This cherishing season fills us with excitement and anticipation for the end of the school year, ultimately awaiting the release of freedom to start summer vacation. So what are you waiting for? Go outside and spring into another unforgettable vernal season on the Hill!
