I love New England fall as much as anyone. As a lifelong resident of New England, I have always looked forward to apple picking and carving pumpkins and for pumpkin flavored things and fall decorations. I love both fall and Halloween, but as soon as it hits November 1st, my love for Christmas takes over and I begin listening to Christmas music. Yes, I have been listening to Christmas music since November 1st, but I still have my purple pumpkin sitting on my desk (and will have it there all year). I love living in New England and having all four seasons, but that doesn’t mean Christmas can’t come early.

The right time to begin listening to Christmas music is November 1st. As soon as Halloween is over, it is time to begin listening to Christmas music. Start listening to “All I Want for Christmas is You” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” (it truly is!). This does not mean that fall decorations need to be put away, but it does mean that it is time to start listening to Christmas music. I have fond memories of listening to Christmas music with my family whether it was driving around looking at Christmas lights or decorating the house or even at our church’s Christmas pageant. From “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” to “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch,” these are hits that I have grown up listening to. I love when November 1st hits and I can start listening to these again. In fact, I believe that you can listen to Christmas music at any time. My family has been known to watch Hallmark movies in the middle of the summer and listen to Christmas music at sporadic times throughout the year. But November 1st is the best and most appropriate time to listen. It is when Halloween celebrations are over and Christmas celebrations can begin.

There are just 54 days between November 1st and December 25th. Only 54 days out of 365. Even that is just 14% of the year. Only 14% of the year to be able to listen to some of the best music, so why wait until after Thanksgiving? Start listening on November 1st in order to extend the happiness and joy that comes with listening to Christmas music.

Everyone knows that November in college is a stressful time with papers and exams being due and finals upcoming. Christmas music is a small way to help with the stress of the month. It is cheerful and happy and, personally speaking, reminds me of the happy memories I associate with Christmas. Christmas music is reminiscent of cookies baking in the oven, the tree all lit up, and a fire in the fireplace. Christmas music helps to bring cheer to a very, very stressful time in college. It helps to remind stressed students that one of the best times of year is coming up.

Thanksgiving can have its day. Watch the parade. Eat your turkey. Put on some Christmas music. The best of both worlds. It is never too early to start listening to something you enjoy. It is never too early to start listening to Christmas music.
