Field hockey is back in full swing on the hill for the Crusaders, and the season is off to a promising start. Currently holding a 2-1 record, the team started off the season strong with wins against Stonehill College and Long Island University.
The first goal of the season was scored by senior forward Meggan Fourie, and assisted by fifth-year Sarah Potter in a 3-1 win at home over Stonehill.
This strong start was followed up by another win, this one decided in overtime, over Long Island. The Crusaders fell 0-2 in the first quarter. Meggan Fourie and Sarah Potter answered both goals in the second quarter and tied the game at 2-2 within the first half, each scoring once in the quarter for the Crusaders.
Meggan Fourie answered Long Island’s next goal on her second score of the game. This time, Fourie’s goal tied the score at three goals apiece as regulation time expired. The game was sealed with an overtime goal by sophomore Crusader Saskia Williams’ first goal of the season. The game secured Crusader field hockey a 2-0 start to the season for the first time since 2006.
Despite their strong first two games, the Crusaders were shut out 5-0 in a Friday night matchup at Fairfield University on Sept. 6. Although this was a hard setback, the team looks strong through their first several weeks and the season outlook remains positive.
The top goal scorer for the Crusaders thus far is Fourie, a senior forward, who has amassed three goals up to this point. In just the first few weeks of the 2024 fall season, Fourie has already been named the Hilton Garden Inn Crusader of the Week, a recognition she was also awarded in 2022.
Over the course of her career at Holy Cross, Fourie has been named to the All-Patriot League Second Team, the Patriot League Preseason All-League team, and has been named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. As a Holy Cross student-athlete, she has also received the honor of being named to the Patriot League Honor Roll and the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad twice each.
Another top player to watch this season is fifth-year forward Sarah Potter. She too has been named to the All-Patriot League Second Team. During the 2023 field hockey season, Potter received an honorable mention as NFHCA Division I Offensive Player of the Week, and won Patriot League Player of the Week honors. As a sophomore, Potter won Crusader of the Week in 2021 as a sophomore. She has recorded 1 goal and 1 assist so far this season.
Also recording a goal already this season are first-year forward/midfielder Jocelyn Monti, junior forward/midfielder Julia Carrozza, and sophomore defense/midfielder Saskia Williams. Assists have been scored by Jocelyn Monti, Sarah Potter, Julia Carrozza, Maguire Sturgis, Marissa MacLean, and Megan Schienbein.
Holy Cross field hockey is on track for a great season. The team is skilled and dedicated, and in just the first three games this has shown through and begun to pay off. Tonight, the Crusaders look to keep up the momentum against Merrimack College in the Cousy Cup at 6pm.
