This week, students of Holy Cross joined together to celebrate a moment of great joy in central Massachusetts–the first day over 40 degrees Fahrenheit. For the first time in what feels like years, the sun shined on this campus and students were able to shed their shabby Canada Goose and North Face jackets. “Taking off the ‘goose’ was really a healing experience,” one Junior told me. “You never really understand how much you were suffering until the sun comes out again.”

Having recently returned from spring break in sunny Punta Cana, dozens of Holy Cross students tried to recreate that experience by setting up blankets on the thin grass of the Hoval. Onlookers reported that some students seemed to cry tears of joy, in disbelief of the fact that they only had to wear two layers of clothing. Of course, there were some who went as far as to only wear crop tops, tank tops, and flip flops. “If you close your eyes and really try to believe,” one student told me, “you can almost feel like you’re back in Florida and it’s spring break.”

For students at Holy Cross, these rare days in the 50’s are a great source of hope. They remind us of hot days at the beach, drinking lemonade on the porch, and lazy summer evenings spent fishing and swimming. The idea of not having to brave the freezing cold to pick up a bagel from Hogan is one that gives us the strength to make it through the final stretch of this second semester. As the cold weather returns, Holy Cross students will have to once again put on their North Face jackets and bravely face the outdoors. “I don’t know how I’m gonna make it through these next couple of weeks if that warm weather was just a fluke,” one student told me. Rest assured that Holy Cross students are a valiant group. Each day we overcome the hardest of challenges: three page poli-sci papers, Spanish pop quizzes, and the dreaded walk from Williams to the Hart center. In the midst of such trials and tribulations, all we ask for are a couple more of those sunny days in the mid 50’s. May Punxsutawney Phil’s prophecy come true, for all our sakes.
