The Patriots are Officially Unwatchable

The days of Bill Belichick’s Patriots dominating the rest of the league are over. The Patriots are coming off of a brutal 6-0 loss to the Chargers on Sunday. Los Angeles’s defense isn’t that good, but they completely shut down the abomination that is the New England Patriots. It was their second shutout loss at home this season. After Mac Jones’s atrocious performance in his first eleven games, Belichick went to Bailey Zappe to find an offensive spark. They did not find one whatsoever.

Of course, you can’t put all the struggles of this miserable season on the quarterback. The Patriots have been constantly plagued by injuries, with key offensive players such as Kendrick Bourne, Devante Parker, Demario Douglas, and most recently Rhamondre Stevenson having to miss games. On the defensive end, they lost their juggernaut linebacker Matthew Judon and promising rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez both in Week 4. But, no, that does not give the 2-10 Patriots any excuses for their train wreck of a season.

Mac Jones, the 2021 first-rounder who had an encouraging rookie year in which he led the Pats to the playoffs, has lost all of his confidence. Just when you think he might be turning things around, he throws yet another reckless interception and gets booed in his own stadium again. Fans have made every excuse in the book for him: Matt Patricia’s poor play-calling last season, a weak offensive line, he’s only twenty-five years old. Going into this season, I was one of these Mac Jones defenders. I blamed Patricia’s play-calling last season. I thought it was a matter of patience with Mac. But time and time again, he has let the team down. He’s had countless opportunities, and he consistently shows that he is not good enough to be a starting quarterback on any NFL team. This season’s failures are absolutely not all his fault, but his poor decision-making and carelessness is the team’s biggest issue, and I don’t expect him to be a Patriot after this season.

Like I said, the blame cannot all be placed on Mac Jones. While it sounds ludicrous to criticize Belichick after what he’s done for the franchise for over twenty years, it’s unfortunately the reality we’re facing right now. After Brady’s departure, Belichick has failed significantly in constructing a competitive roster. Last offseason, he passed up on bringing back the team’s best receiver in Jakobi Meyers, and instead gave a 3 year, $25 million deal to Juju Smith-Schuster, and what a mistake that has been. Smith-Schuster has been a huge disappointment despite his impressive resume. He has recorded just 170 yards and one touchdown in the entire season so far, while Meyers already has 591 yards and six touchdowns on the year. Belichick also passed up on signing receiver Deandre Hopkins last offseason after there was mutual interest. Hopkins could have made a huge impact for this offense, but Bill elected to pass on the opportunity for whatever reason.

His decisions in the draft recently have also been extremely questionable. In the first round in 2022, he drafted guard Cole Strange with the 29th overall pick. Strange was projected to go 76th. The bold move by Bill to pick him that high looks even more laughable now, as Strange has missed a ton of time in his first two seasons to injury. At the time, there were plenty of better-value options on the board such as Breece Hall and Christian Watson. This past draft in 2023, Belichick opted to take kicker Chad Ryland in the fourth round. Even if Ryland was an elite kicker, which he’s been anything but this season, taking him that early made no sense. There were still a ton of great players left on the board, such as Puka Nacua, who is currently having a phenomenal rookie campaign for the Rams. But Belichick decided the best available player was Chad Ryland.

I understand how it may look ungrateful or unappreciative to criticize the greatest coach in NFL history, but since Brady’s departure, the offense has been painful to watch. As crazy as firing Belichick sounds, it may be the best route for the organization this offseason. They need to hit the reset button and completely blow it up. Fortunately, they are on track to hold a top 3 pick which could be the perfect jumpstart to a full-on rebuild, where Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are fantastic quarterback candidates. They could also draft top receiver prospect Marvin Harrison Jr. and add a quarterback later on in the draft or via trade or free agency. There’s multiple good options there, and the Patriots can’t afford to screw it up this time around.
