Seelos Theater, located in the basement of Kimball Dining Hall, is a free movie theater open to all students and the Worcester public. It shows a large variety of movies, both new and old, providing students with an opportunity to watch movies outside of their dorms. Most students tend to stay in their dorms, using streaming services or paying for recently released movies. Seelos provides the opportunity to watch movies for free on a bigger screen than a personal TV, phone, or laptop. This is a place for students to take advantage of in order to watch newly released movies. Hit movie Barbie already came to Seelos once this year, and it was shown for a second time on November 15. It currently costs twenty dollars to stream. By taking advantage of Seelos Theater, students can save money while enjoying the film in a fantastic cinema.
Other recent films shown in Seelos this year have included Oppenheimer, How To Blow Up a Pipeline, The Flash, Cocaine Bear, and The Little Mermaid.
Matthew Nickerson ‘24 has seen numerous movies in Seelos Theater. He says, “I think that Seelos is a great thing to have on campus that more students ought to take advantage of. By attending some of the releases I have been able to rewatch some favorites (Across the Spider-Verse), discover some new releases I hadn’t seen (Bullet Train), and watch movies I probably wouldn’t see if they weren’t offered by Seelos (The Flash.) Going down to Seelos has been a great way to feel transported away from the stresses of classwork and activities.”
Julia Kane ‘27 feels similarly, saying, “I believe the Seelos theater is an amazing, yet underutilized part of Holy Cross. I have been to a couple of the movies they’ve shown thus far and it has been very fun, as well as free. If you prefer to have a relaxed night in rather than going out, definitely check out Seelos and their movie schedule!”
Seelos is a place to escape, relax, and enjoy a movie with friends. It is an underappreciated, hidden spot on the Hill that more students should take advantage of. Whether you are looking for action, romance, or sports, Seelos is the place for you to find a new (or old) movie to enjoy. Next time you are looking for something to do, check out the Seelos schedule! Movies are shown on Wednesdays at 3:30 pm and 8:00 pm and on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 pm. Upcoming movies include Master Gardener, Blackberry, and Persian Lessons.
