Being a college student is undeniably challenging, whether it be in terms of schoolwork, relationships, or friendships. Life can be complicated, and trying to maneuver through personal obstacles alone can feel impossible. That’s why creating healthy sustainable habits, as well as boundaries, is critical to being successful on the Hill. These habits can help to develop a balanced lifestyle that allows you to flourish here at Holy Cross.
The Office of Student Wellness Education is determined to provide their support in educating and supporting students on all matters concerning positive lifestyles. Last year, Joy LaGrutta and Elizabeth Drexler-Hines decided to create a new club called Peer Wellness Coaching. They noticed that students often have a hard time reaching out for help, and they wanted to establish a service where students felt more comfortable talking about their struggles. So, a selection of about 15 students were chosen to become coaches, and last year this group participated in wellness training from experts on collegiate peer to peer coaching. The staff is made up of students from different grades, clubs, and backgrounds with unique perspectives that they will draw on to benefit you in your one-on-one meetings. Finally, this program has officially started, and the coaches are ready to go!
Peer Wellness Coaching is not therapy, but rather an opportunity to learn from a fellow peer on strategies to make the most of the Holy Cross experience without feeling judged. You are not limited in what you choose to discuss, but popular topics include developing a better sleep routine, communicating your needs to roommates or professors, and how to set academic goals for the semester. Whether it be about social, mental, or emotional dilemmas, Peer Wellness Coaches will help you build a framework of good habits that can build your wellness tool kit. When meeting with these coaches, they will be dedicated to providing you with a listening ear and an open mind. Every problem you encounter, no matter how big or small it seems, is important to them and they will do our best to assist you.
With that all being said, you may be wondering how to sign up for your first appointment? These meetings can be booked on the peer wellness website, where you can choose which coach you would like to talk with. Each has a personal bio, where you can read about their interests and get a sense of who they are. Once you pick a coach, there is a brief optional survey where you can outline what has been concerning you. There are a number of time slots available, so do not worry about whether you’ll be able to find an available time. Once your appointment is booked, head over to Ciampi (the new wellness housing) and enjoy an hour of safe, supportive conversation that can help you solve your problems.
In this upcoming week, look out for emails about Peer Wellness Coaching, as we are hosting a giveaway for the first twenty individuals who sign up. When you go to your first meeting, you will receive a FREE Holy Cross Sweatshirt!
