During spooky season, the campus slowly becomes a scarier place, as the spirit of Halloween creeps into view. Last weekend, in order to bring in more Halloween spirit, Holy Cross Campus Recreation hosted the scariest type of an event: a five-kilometer run. Each participant donated $20 and received an awesome t-shirt and a fun experience. The run started at 10 am on Saturday and looped all around the campus from Hogan to the Jo to Brooks and back again.
Scary decorations abound, frightening the runners as they made their way through the trail. The finish line was a large decorated arc for participants to run through as they finished their runs. The run allowed students to get some exercise with their friends and embrace the Halloween spirit, but more importantly, it was an opportunity for money to be raised for 3 local charities: Abby’s House, Mustard Seed, and Why Me?
Two friends, Patrick Ryan ‘27 and Trey Lacandula ‘27, were really excited to run the 5-kilometer together on Saturday morning. “Campus rec did a great job setting up a 5-kilometer that was fun, spooky, and challenging,” Ryan says. “It was also a great way to spend time with my friends and be challenged together.”
Lacandula agreed, saying, “I can agree with the challenging part. I could do without the hills next time.” Many of the other students who participated in the run felt the same way, remarking they enjoyed spending time with friends and also having the opportunity to support local charities.
The run was a blast for the participants and left a positive impact on the broader Worcester community. If you weren’t able to attend the event, you’re in luck. Campus Rec has indicated they will be hosting more runs in the future, so be on the lookout.
