For years, the Campus Activities Board has been providing fun events, entertainment, and outings to the Holy Cross community. CAB holds night-time programming every Friday night, giving students the opportunity to interact in an inclusive, sober atmosphere. Alongside the Orientation Leaders, CAB plays a major role in welcoming all first year students to campus with events such as “First Night” and “Casino Night,” where the incoming students have the chance to enjoy the festivities and socialize. Behind the scenes, student leaders plan these events and put them into action.
One such student leader is Kieran Corcoran ’24, who has gained valuable skills from his four years in the club. As Kieran says, “ I’ve been a part of CAB since my freshman year. Since I’m a senior now, I’m bringing experience of running and managing all different types of events over the course of more than 3 years. I’ve learned to not only plan well, but to be adaptable. While this may sound counter-intuitive, adaptability can only emerge from sufficient planning.” Kieran showed his experience last week with his “Sweet and Savory Social,” where he brought food trucks to the Hoval and ran Bingo in Crossroads at the same time. With his years of experience in CAB’s Social Committee, Kieran is very familiar with the planning process, as well as with event execution, where cooperation and adaptability are essential.
There are a variety of reasons why a student might join CAB: as a resume booster, a way to make friends, or as a way to give back to the Holy Cross community. Anyone who knows Billy Holmes ‘25 of CAB knows that he’s a person who loves to bring joy to others. Billy explained how he brings this to CAB, saying, “Last year I was one of the Co-Chairs for the Special Events and Outings Committee. I think that really helped me with understanding the expectations of CAB and realizing how I could play a small role in positively impacting campus spirit and enjoyment.” With the sacrifices that CAB members make in order to run their committees and events it seems that this is the ultimate reward of being in the club—bringing joy to the students who attend the events.
After an event is over, CAB members are always looking to the future. As Billy told The Spire, “One of the things I am really excited for this year is to continue recruiting people to join CAB and hearing all their thoughts and ideas regarding CAB. Also, as it relates to events, I am really looking forward to Music Trivia and Battle of the Bands in the Spring.” Battle of Bands, of course, is the Spring semester competition which determines the student band that opens the Spring Concert. The Spring Concert, also planned by CAB, is always a massively attended event, bringing most of the campus community together to see acts such as Drake, the Kid LAROI, or Two Friends.
In order to run all of these events, CAB is in constant need of new members. This is why, on September 20th, the club held an info session in which committee leaders, or, “point persons,” explained the events that their committees hold. At the info session, students were able to speak to point persons individually and decide which committees they wanted to join. For some of these students, joining a CAB committee will mark the beginning of a four year journey, in which they will bring exciting new activities to The Hill. It is only through their hard work and enthusiasm that CAB is able to continue engaging students every Friday night.
