According to the College of the Holy Cross website, “With a spectrum of more than 100 clubs and organizations, there are unlimited ways to develop personally and professionally–while also having the time of your life.” At its core, Holy Cross is a tight-knit community modeled in the Jesuit spirit. One of the best ways to foster this sense of community is to get involved in campus life.
With this goal in mind, the anticipated “Co-Curricular Extravaganza” took place at the Luth Athletic Center on September 16th. Students of all years stopped by to check out the large variety of student-run booths. Representatives of nearly one hundred clubs were present and eager to share details about their clubs with interested students. Holy Cross Athletics and the Purple Key Society sponsored and organized the fair. The latter organization is an example of an active club here on campus dedicated to the promotion of service and school spirit (The Spire 9/16/2022).
At Holy Cross, there is a wide variety of clubs available to join. The long list ranges from club sports and intramurals of all kinds, peer educator clubs, cultural clubs (e.g. the Caribbean African Assembly, the Arab Students Association, etc.), creative writing clubs, and many others including our very own Spire. Chances are there is a club for almost any niche interest students might have; if not, students are encouraged to create one. Thus, Holy Cross students have the unique opportunity to take the initiative to cultivate a community that shares specific interests and talents.
As students filtered into Luth this past Saturday, an ice cream truck greeted them. As well as the chance to participate in a raffle and student volunteers, handing out pamphlets. The raffle included college essentials such as a purple Stanley cup, an alarm clock, a pickleball set, and an iced coffee machine, among other things. However, students did not have to win a prize to walk away from this event with an assortment of complimentary items. Practically every booth was offering free things such as stickers, T-shirts, candy, and even dental floss.
Lily Baumfeld’ 27, explained that the Co-Curricular Extravaganza had a “very lively and enthusiastic atmosphere.” Liandra Federico’ 27 added that “there was a compelling energy that drew [her] in.”
Club representatives were satisfied with the outcome of this event. Not only was there a large turnout but there was also a great number of people who signed up for each club.
However, it should be noted that if a student could attend this event for whatever reason, it is not too late to be put on an email list for a club that might interest them. Under the “Campus Life” dropbox on the Holy Cross website, there is a subsection called “Clubs and Organizations.” All clubs currently offered at Holy Cross are listed along with their corresponding email addresses. Please do not be shy to contact these clubs via email or in person. The more students who get involved the better!
