The campus group Counseling Outreach Peer Educators (COPE) will host Fresh Check Day on Tuesday, October 2 to do a mental health check-in with students. The event, held from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the Hoval, will include food, prizes, giveaways, and interactive activities focused on mental health, such as “Trash Your Insecurities.”

The Fresh Check Day program describes this event as “an uplifting awareness raising event,” with the goal of decreasing the stigma around mental health and providing resources for students. Additionally, a strong emphasis is placed on “peer-to-peer messaging,” through which students serve as empowering resources to peers.

This mental health check-in serves to raise awareness about mental health statistics on college campuses, such as the fact that two out of three students don’t receive the help they need, according to the Fresh Check Day programming. With the goal of changing such statistics, Fresh Check Day provides an opportunity for students to learn more about the resources available to them in a relaxed, fun environment.

This event was first created by the Jordan Porco Foundation, named after a student who committed suicide as a freshman in college. The organization’s mission is “to prevent suicide, promote mental health, and create a message of hope for young adults,” according to their website.

Along with COPE, this event is sponsored by Athletics, the Chaplain’s Office, the Office of Disability Services/Disability Rights, Education, Activism and Mentoring (DREAM), the Office of Multicultural Education, Multicultural Peer Educators, the Office of Student Involvement, PRIDE, Relationship Peer Educators (RPE), the office of Residence Life and Housing, the Office of Student Affairs, Students for Responsible Choices (SRC), the Student Government Association (SGA), and Student Health Awareness Peer Educators (SHAPE).

In addition to attending Fresh Check Day, students can like COPE on Facebook, follow @HolyCrossCOPE on Instagram, and use the hashtag #FRESHCHECKDAYHOLYCROSS on social media. More information can be found at freshcheckday.com/schools/college-of-the-holy-cross/.
