Family Weekend a Success, Despite the Rain

By Seamus Brennan

During the weekend of Oct. 21-23, the Office of Student Involvement (OSI) hosted the annual Holy Cross Family Weekend at various on-campus sites.

The weekend provided an opportunity for students’ relatives to learn about life at Holy Cross. The weekend’s schedule included art exhibits, athletic events, fine arts performances, and religious services.

The college choir and jazz ensemble kicked off family weekend with their early afternoon and evening performances. In addition, the Cantor Art Gallery hosted the “Woven Exhibit” walkthrough, curated by Susan Rodgers, professor emerita of anthropology. Campus Activities Board (CAB) hosted its annual family weekend event with a “Masquerade Casino Night” as this year’s theme. The second annual Crusaders Against Cancer 5K took place on a unique course that had participants running the many hills on campus and benefitted the 15-40 Connection—an early detection cancer nonprofit. Student docents showed families the StickWork sculpture crafted by Patrick Dougherty, the 2016 artist-in-residence, “Just off the Beaten Path.” In sports, Holy Cross football took on Lehigh at Fitton Field, where the team was defeated 46-14. The men’s hockey team also played this weekend against Boston College at the DCU Center but lost 6-1.

Other highlights from the weekend include the Alpha Sigma Nu—the National Jesuit Honor Society—induction, Dance Ensemble show, and Black Student Union’s fish fry.

“Some family weekend events are featured year-to-year, such as the football game and masses; although student organizations also have events that occur each year. Other events do change annually based on the College’s desires,” said Jordan Colon, a community development coordinator at the College.

There are upcoming campus and residence hall-specific events geared toward the Halloween/fall season. A Halloween costume contest in Crossroads on Oct. 31 at 8 p.m. will be  hosted by the Class of 2020 Student Government Association and CAB is sponsoring Halloween Fest today, Oct. 28.
