As midterm season passes, students are faced with new opportunities for personal and academic development. On March 9th, many students were emailed about applying for the Dana Scholars Program, named after American philanthropist, Charles. A. Dana, (1881-1975). Students who demonstrate high levels of academic achievement were invited to apply to the program, one of much prestige. The program is designed to “identify and encourage students of academic promise and good character who are entering their junior or senior year.” The amount of scholarship from this upcoming academic year is $6500. Students who are accepted into the program are invited to attend special activities and programs throughout the year. To apply, students must log in to the application page they received in their email and complete the recommendation waiver form, the Dana Scholar Application form, and must send two recommendation requests. The deadline for applications is Monday, April 27th.

The Charles A. Dana Scholarship is in addition to the College Scholars Program offered to all second year students regardless of GPA (a new change implemented this year.) The College Scholars Program is an interdisciplinary course taken for all accepted applicants which is an honors writing thesis initiative. Students in the program will be able to connect with others from different majors and form relationships with professors that are not in their field of study. Students take a seminar of their choice once accepted and enroll in a thesis credit equivalent as seniors. The application opened on December 1st and closed on February 2nd. Applicants should expect to hear back in the upcoming week.

Students have also been encouraged to apply to the Writer’s Workshop via email. The deadline was March 13th. The application included a form with a response to a writing prompt, a cover letter, and contact information for two professional references. Writer’s Workshop consultants are students who peer review and help edit a variety of different student work. After completing a course in the fall designed to teach students how to edit writing and tutor their peers, students begin working a set number of hours each week in the Writer’s Workshop, located on the second floor of Dinand.

On March 11th, an Academic Internship Info Session was held at 4pm in Hogan 410. The Academic Internship Program is a “full credit, one semester course comprised of both an analytical component (an internship seminar) and an experiential component (fieldwork at an internship site).” The program is open to rising juniors and seniors who are expected to intern 8-10 hours a week. The Program offers 5 different courses: The Business of Sport, Policy and Politics in America: The Midterm Elections, How Medical Clinicians Reason, Engaging Inequality: Nonprofit and Govt Agencies, and Women & the Law. As stated on myHC,  “The first priority deadline for applications is Tuesday, March 31st at 11:59 PM. The second priority deadline is Friday, April 24th at 11:59 PM. The final deadline is Tuesday, August 4th at 11:59 PM. After August 4th, students will only be accepted into the Academic Internship Program if they have already secured an internship.”

Nominations for Student Leadership Awards are also live, closing on March 27th. The available awards are as follows: Senior Leadership – specifically recognizes members of the Class of 2026, Personal Achievement, Personal Leadership, SGA-Recognized Student Organizations, and Faculty and Staff – specifically recognized for their work with recognized student organizations. This annual celebration recognizes nominees who are full-time students at the college as well as those who demonstrate good judicial standing. After the application process, nominated students and their nominees will be invited to a ceremony to celebrate their hard work. These programs and applications are just a few of the many ways students can develop personally and professionally as well as receive recognition for their dedication.
