March Madness may have just begun, but there have already been some big surprises. That crazy upset, the star player injury, and other things I definitely know about because I’m not writing this before it actually begins. Anyways, the biggest surprise of all came when President Rougeau made an announcement after women’s basketball beat Lehigh in the Patriot League Championship. “Ah yes, March Madness. We are thrilled to announce that in honor of our team’s success, we will be renaming the college to show our love and commitment to women’s basketball. We will henceforth be known as: UConn.” Fans and players alike were perplexed by the announcement; senior Paige Mahoney, now called Paige Bueckers, told the newspaper formerly known as The Eggplant, now The Blueberry, “We were pretty blindsided by it. One second we’re chanting ‘purple and white’, the next we’re getting blue jerseys tossed to us by a six-foot tall husky.”

UConn-Worcester (AKA WooConn) has upset some students as well. Many of our Massachusetts locals are not happy about being associated with their cooler neighbor. Several disgruntled Huskies protested the change on the Hoval, but were quickly calmed with promises of New Haven pizza and a trip to Stew Leonard’s. Others have embraced being an enclave of the great state of Connecticut. “Gilmore Girls” watch parties have taken over Fenwick classrooms and WooSox merch has been replaced with the Hartford Yard Goats (yes, that is the actual team name). As a Connecticut native myself, I’m excited for this new chapter in WooConn’s history. Congrats to women’s basketball and go… huskies?
