On Thursday Feb. 5, 2026, Holy Cross students had the opportunity to explore the numerous programs offered that provide opportunities to give back to the Worcester community at the annual Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD) fair in Hogan Ballroom. From tutoring and mentoring, to food distribution, and elder care, the event highlighted the service opportunities available during the spring semester, encouraging students to get involved and give back to the community.

At Holy Cross, the SPUD program, led by Associate Chaplain Marty Kelly alongside a large team of committed student leaders, dedicates itself to enhancing undergraduate student engagement with the community, servicing over thirty community partnership programs highlighting three key areas: Children and Youth, Housing and Food Insecurity, as well as Healthcare and Disability Support. The variety of engagement areas makes it possible for students to not only log volunteering hours, but rather to make real connections with people outside of campus.

The SPUD mission statement highlights the Jesuit ideal of “men and women for and with others,” emphasizing personal growth, and a social responsibility to others to shape the students’ perspectives of society. By connecting to diverse populations, such as the community in Worcester, students obtain firsthand experiences addressing real-world issues by assisting in youth services, elder care, and supporting those experiencing food insecurity. Today, SPUD is the largest organization on campus, with over four hundred students participating in the program and spending their time off campus. Its scale reflects both the program’s impact and the culture of service at Holy Cross.

“I have really enjoyed my first semester volunteering in youth mentorship through SPUD,” said a first-year volunteer for the program. “The program has allowed me to give back to my community in a way I never thought possible, and experience more of Worcester. I look forward to attending my session every week and I am excited, as well as ready to return for the spring semester.” Other students echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the accessibility of aligning volunteer hours with class schedules as well as their own personal interests. SPUD not only benefits the community, but also provides valuable opportunities for students to develop leadership qualities, gain real-world experience in a specific field, and connect with other peers from Holy Cross.

At their fair, students have the opportunity to speak with the current upperclassmen site leaders to learn more about the various sites available to volunteer, the responsibilities of their specific program, and the scheduling of the time. With limited availability due to students continuing from the fall semester, it is important that students discover which programs pique their interest the most, while also working around their class schedules and extracurricular responsibilities.

Beyond the fair, SPUD emphasizes the importance of active community participation, as each site provides a unique outlook on the community as a whole. Students who participated, typically spend an hour a week at their site, forming connections with peers, and learning valuable skills that can be taken back to Holy Cross. As students become more involved, there is a dedicated team of student leaders, ranging from interns to program directors, and community organizers. Together, everyone involved makes the organization run successfully and effectively to reach optimal engagement.

SPUD continues to provide Holy Cross students with opportunities to engage in meaningful connections throughout the city of Worcester by offering a wide range of programs that support those in need. SPUD is always looking for students interested in volunteering, and it is one of the most influential organizations on campus.
