The Holy Cross football team earned a decisive win over Georgetown at Fenway Park, turning one of Boston’s most historic venues into a sea of purple for the day. Holy Cross football had not returned to Fenway since its historic win over Boston College in 1956, making it a nearly seventy-year, long-awaited return and a highly anticipated event for students, faculty, and alumni alike.

On the morning of Saturday the 22nd, Boston was filled with Holy Cross students, alumni, and families who traveled into the city for the game. Crowds gathered all around the Fenway neighborhood, creating the sense that Fenway had temporarily become an extension of Mount St. James. Anywhere you looked you would be able to see someone in purple gear or an alumni reconnecting with an old classmate.

Fenway Park, typically home to the Boston Red Sox, provided a unique backdrop for the matchup. The ballpark was equipped with the HC emblem in the middle of the field, incredible purple lights whenever Holy Cross scored a touchdown, and tons of Holy Cross fans who kept the energy high throughout. Holy Cross students occupied two sections of the stadium which provided for a great concentration of school spirit. President Rougeau sang the national anthem to kick off the game. The dance and cheer teams provided support for the team with exciting routines. The novelty of the venue, combined with the large turnout from the Holy Cross community, created a memorable game-day environment for the last home football game of the semester. The student section was loud, reactive, and certainly served as a boost for the football team’s ultimate success. Holy Cross held a strong lead over Georgetown for the entire game, and the final score was a 42-7 win for Holy Cross. Fenway’s sound system played “Sweet Caroline,” as the fourth quester was coming to a close, which every fan in the stands joined in singing together.

For Holy Cross, the game represented more than a non-conference matchup. The strong turnout demonstrated the high degree of alumni engagement and the enthusiasm surrounding Crusader athletics. Holy Cross not only delivered on the field but also filled Fenway Park with unmistakable school pride. This game brought together the Holy Cross community in a historic way which reminded all students how the Holy Cross community transcends campus and will be with students wherever they go.
