Twas the week before finals, when all through the halls, you could hear students stressing and enjoying snowfall… As the winter season has approached Mount Saint James, students and faculty alike are excited not only for the break, but the exciting events on campus. Holiday happenings started as early as mid-November as the Office of Student Involvement has curated a list of exciting activities for all to partake in. The Food and Faith event, held in Campion House Kitchen from November 17th to the 21st showcased a collection of our community’s most cherished foods as students and staff were encouraged to sign up and make some of their holiday favorites. This author particularly enjoyed the mini cheese bites her Language Assistant, Ahmed made. Many also gathered in Campion on the morning of Wednesday, December 3rd, for the semester’s last Bagel Wednesday. Hot chocolate stands and snack tables have also been spotted in Cool Beans and the Hogan vicinity in the past few weeks.
Hosted at Fenway Stadium, many gathered just before Thanksgiving to watch the riveting triumph of the Holy Cross football team. Defeating Georgetown, 42-7, Holy Cross ended their football season on a high note. HC experienced their first snow on Tuesday, December 2nd. As many hoped for snow days and an excuse to make snow angels on the Hoval, classes persisted. The Spire hopes that you, dear reader, did not tumble down the Dinand steps. However, if you did, don’t worry. We’re sure no one saw. Snowball fights and sledding aside, the beloved Chrstimas tree lighting was rescheduled to Wednesday night on the Okane steps because of the weather. With special appearances from some of the acapella groups, the tree was lit and Christmas was celebrated amongst the crowd.
By the time of this publication, The 47th Annual Festival of Lessons and Carols will have been held in St. Joseph’s Chapel will have been filled with people and with festive songs of the season. The choir is set to perform for the community at 8pm. This event, marked by its prayerful presence and joyous music is a holiday staple. Member of the choir, Sophia Olbrysh ‘28 expressed her excitement to The Spire. “I am most excited to sing with my friends and celebrate Christmas and the holidays! People should expect a concert with wonderful music, the best energy, and just so much joy!” On Friday, December 5th in the Hogan Ballroom, the Annual Holiday Vendor Market will be held from 10am-4pm, hosted by the Campus Activities Board. Vendors and small businesses from the Worcester area have been invited to attend the event and showcase their line of products. Also happening on Friday from 5pm-7pm, the Luth Athletic Complex will be hosting “Benching for Breast Cancer” hosted by HC for a Cure. All proceeds will go to Pink Revolution at UMass Health.The weekend before finals additionally offers a variety of relaxing activities for students to partake in. The Study Retreat at the Joyce Contemplative Center will be hosted from 10:30am on Saturday to 11am on Monday. Students are invited to attend to take advantage of the JCC and its beautiful resources and amenities as well as get ahead on their study plans. Looking ahead to the future, there will be a Hot Chocolate Study Bar Break in the Hogan Lobby from 1:30pm-4:30pm on Tuesday, December 9th. The Spire wishes everyone a happy holiday break and a stress free finals season!
