We’ve finally made it to the end of the semester. It’s been a long one, but the campus community has been amazingly resilient. As The Spire has seen, students have remained engaged with creative initiatives and meaningful programs. Various organizations have offered exciting events to bring the community together for discussion and comfort. The Holy Cross spirit has continued to shine around the world, helping us to navigate this semester’s challenges and move forward.
For tips on how to take care of yourself during this finals season, check out “Sleepy Eyes and Stressful Times: The Importance of Managing Sleep and Stress,” by Nicole Letendre ‘23, Features Editor. Letendre’s interview with Martha Sullivan, FNP-BC, Associate Director of Health Services, is full of advice on how to realistically balance academic commitments with your personal wellbeing.
The holiday season is upon us, with plenty of joy to offer despite the conditions during the pandemic. In her article “Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays :o)” Hannah Johnson ‘21, Chief Eggplant Editor, notes that this joy is more important than ever this year – “After all we’ve been through, we could use some festivity, so spread good holiday cheer!” The College has strived to do just that, enjoying its annual tree lighting on December 10, covered by Grace Bromage ‘23, Chief Features Editor, in “Holy Cross Tree Lighting Ceremony 2020.” As community members look forward to other celebrations with their family and friends, Catherine Yasckira ‘24, Staff Writer, encourages readers to spread joy by approaching their festivities with an eco-friendly mindset in her article “Give Back to the Planet this Holiday Season.”
The Spire is pleased to feature two thoughtful responses to last week’s Opinions article “Holy Cross Must Balance Values of Academic Freedom and Anti-Racism,” by Ethan Bachand ‘22 and Kelly Gallagher ‘22, Chief News Editor and Editor-in-Chief, respectively. We welcome a “Letter to the Editors,” by Margaret Freije, Provost and Dean of the College, and “Response to Spire Letter” by Amit Taneja, Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
We’d like to extend our gratitude to our dedicated editors and to the many community members who shared their stories with The Spire this semester. We’d also like to thank our readers, and we wish the community a restful, healthy Winter Break.
