The Holy Cross Women’s Track and Field team shattered multiple personal records last weekend at the Patriot League Indoor Championships held at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The Crusaders scored 43.66 points and placed sixth out of ten teams at the meet.
Junior Caroline Frey ran a personal best 58.9 seconds in the 400 meter race, placing 12th overall at the championship. Senior Lauren Rasmus also broke a personal record in the 500 meter race, finishing in 7th place with a time of 1:16:51 seconds, while first-year Kelsey O’Hara also ran a personal best in the same event with a time of 1:18:21. Rasmus, Frey, and O’Hara went on to run the 4×400 meter relay race later on Sunday afternoon along with first-year Milly O’Brien. The group placed fifth with a time of 3:54:99. Sophomore Sydney McDonald placed 3rd in the high jump with a personal record of 1.65 meters.
The records didn’t stop there, either — sophomore Marina MacKinnon posted a personal record-breaking time in the 800 meter race of 2:14:91, and first-year Emily Koufos earned a personal record in the 1000 meter race with a 13th place time of 3:01:14. Senior Alex Curtin broke personal records in both the long jump and the 200 meter dash, qualifying for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships in the former with a 5.87 meter jump and finishing the latter race in 25.41 seconds. Curtin also placed 8th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.88 seconds. Other Crusaders had notable showings at the Championship as well – sophomore Abbie Mokwuah placed 4th in the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 13.53 meters, and sophomore Christa Jay Moore qualified for ECACs with a personal best and second place finish of 4.8 meters in the pole vault.
The Holy Cross Men’s Track and Field team placed 6th at the Championship as well, and they also had their fair share of personal records shattered over the weekend. Sophomore Gabe Piepergedes and Junior Freddie Halloran both broke their own records in the 500 meter race, with Piepergerdes placing 10th with a time of 1:05:93 and Halloran finishing soon thereafter with an 11th place time of 1:06:00. Sophomore Michael Pichay led the Crusaders in the triple jump with a second place showing of 14.77 meters. Dan Dempsey placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.89 meters. Senior Brandon Thornhill placed sixth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8:41 seconds, and senior Alex Escada placed 6th in the Heptathlon with 4,579 points. The 4×400 meter relay team of Thornhill, Pierpergerdes, Halloran, and first-year Will Hornyak had a season best time of 3:20:58, earning them 5th place overall. The distance medley relay comprised of sophomore Peter Mitchell, first-year Corey Kumamoto, and juniors Bobby Tuzzio and Jake Newton ran a season best 10:30:63. Both Crusader teams look ahead to next weekend’s BU Last Chance Meet.
