Holy Cross Men’s Soccer came out ready to play on Tuesday in the Patriot League Quarterfinals against Lehigh, scoring three quick goals en route to a 3-0 win over the Mountain Hawks on the road.
Senior forward Arno Rupp kicked off the festivities in the third minute, dispossessing Lehigh goalie/rapper/actor Will Smith of the ball and putting it into the net. It was Rupp’s eighth goal of the year, and the fastest goal the Crusaders have scored all year. Senior forward Nick Cestaro scored his third goal in four games to put the Crusaders up 2-0 twelve minutes into the game. Then, in the thirteenth minute, senior defender Brad Ross headed freshman midfielder Max Krause’s corner into the net to give Holy Cross a 3-0 lead.
The quick onslaught of offense left Lehigh shocked, and they spent the rest of the game trying to recover. Holy Cross locked down on defense and junior goalie Henry Stutz did his best impression of a brick wall for the rest of the game.
When the dust had settled, Stutz had come away with a shut-out and a career-high seven saves. In Lehigh’s offensive desperation, they launched 22 shots, placing only seven on goal. They drew 14 fouls, and won 12 corner kicks. Despite their best efforts, they were impotent against the tough Crusader defense.
Holy Cross’ next game is tonight at 8:05 against number two seed Boston University at the Ridley Athletic Complex in Baltimore, MD. In Holy Cross’ Turnpike Trophy game against BU this year, they lost 3-0, so it’s a nice opportunity for some revenge. The game will be streaming online if you want to watch but can’t get to Baltimore in time.
